As part of our Matariki celebrations, the Village comes alive during the school holidays with a full programme of fun, hands-on activities for all ages.
A great way to celebrate Matariki through learning, play, and connection, exploring history in an interactive and engaging way for the whole whānau.
Get crafty in the parlour of Puhi Nui homestead in hands-on activities with costumed guides and explore the heritage gardens with a winter orienteering challenge!

‘Waste not, want not’! Drop in to make a colourful mini art piece from fabric scraps.
WEDNESDAYS Cross stitch 10:30-12:30
Learn basic cross stitch. Drop in to make a monogrammed badge or mini ornament.
THURSDAYS Working with wool 10:30-12:30
Drop in to learn how wool from the farm is processed and spun into yarn. Have a go at spinning and weaving or make a pom pom.
SATURDAYS School Lesson 11am
Mind your manners and sit up straight or face the stap! Learn your 3 Rs and practice handwriting on slates.
SUNDAYS Butter making 11am
Roll up your sleeves and help churn cream into butter!
Toi art carving workshop (Waka hourua): Thursday, 9 July, 11am–1pm.
Join carver and artist Calvin Devine (Ngāpuhi) for a hands-on, 2-hour whakairo workshop. Create your own waka hourua (double hulled canoe) while learning how Māori navigators used the stars and traditional knowledge to cross the Pacific.

Join carver, artist, and cultural facilitator Calvin Devine (Ngāpuhi) for a hands-on, 2-hour whakairo (carving) workshop. Learn about traditional taonga pūoro (musical instruments) as you create your own porotiti or pūrerehua, exploring their uses, sounds, and cultural significance.
